It is not always a good idea to post on social media that thanks to Bitcoin, you are now so rich and can afford such a luxurious lifestyle. This should have been understood by a Turkish bingo coiner by now. After posting luxury imagery on social media, he was followed by a gang as he walked to his car in Istanbul's Merter neighborhood.
Just before the Bitcoiner got in, the gang overcame him and kidnapped him and his laptop. She then detained him in a minibus for eight hours and, under threat of force, got him to spend 450 bitcoins (about 3 million euros).
However, the kidnappers were not really good at hiding their tracks. After the victim filed a complaint with the police, this began to investigate. To do so, the officers combined a video surveillance of the gang with blockchain analysis of the cash flow. This allowed the police to catch the gang in the act while kidnapping their second victim. Now they are sentenced to hard prison terms of up to 30 years.
So far, such a case is still the exception. However, many Bitcoiner and other crypto currency empires worry about their security already today. While this danger is still rather low in Germany, in other countries, with more poverty and crime, it could increase significantly in the near future.
