Moldova is interested in blockchain for the fight against child trafficking

The Eastern European state of Moldova is interested in blockchain technology in the fight against child trafficking.

According to Reuters, a member of the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) said this week that he was attending a meeting in the capital, Chisinau.

Children from rural areas are increasingly the victims of traffickers, as they often have no official documents and can then be transported across the border with fake papers.

Yoshiyuki Yamamoto, UNOPS officer for the blockchain, described the technology as "immutable." They could store digital IDs with biometric data so that fake IDs would be recognized upon departure.

Mihail Beregoi, State Secretary of the Moldovan Ministry of Interior, said:

"This is a big problem and we are trying to find efficient solutions to it."

Only this week, the United Nations announced details of its project. In cooperation with the World Identity Network (WIN for short), a pilot project with the Blockchain against child trafficking is to be developed.

Mariana Dahan CEO of WIN stated that Moldova was the first country to show interest in the project.

According to media reports, trafficking in human beings for sexual exploitation and forced labor in the country is said to have increased significantly.
