IPCHAIN Database: Science & Blockchain

In this post, I would like to prepare a project in which I am even more involved. This is the project, IPCHAIN Database or just simply IPCHAIN. IP stands for intellectual property, ie intellectual property. Of course, the project relies on the blockchain technology in its solution, and is a scientist for a scientist. So that one can understand, which is actually extremely simple idea behind IPCHAIN, here first the problem definition.

Intellectual property and how to protect it

Intellectual property refers to a multitude of things: logos, documents, inventions, scientific papers, but also symbols or names. Of course, it is clear that the author or creator of this should also own or should have the rights to his intellectual property. The acquisition of these rights is regulated by appropriate laws. For certain intellectual property, the author automatically obtains all rights, while for some forms it requires an application and state grant (eg in the form of patents, utility models, etc.) for protection. The mentioned patent application is particularly complex. Not only does such an application take extremely long, it is also often associated with costs of up to € 10,000 and more, resulting from the high cost of a patent attorney required in the formulation of the patent application. Due to a lack of financial resources or commercial intentions, many scientists choose to publish their work in the form of defensive publications. This rejects them as inventors and no one else can apply for a patent for this idea or scientific discovery because the basic condition of novelty is not met. In addition, the defensive publication allows in many countries, such as the US, a subsequent patent application. Thus, one's own status can be secured first and then be searched for investors. Even existing patents can be secured by additional defensive publications.

The advantages are many and such a defensive publication can be done for example in a scientific magazine. But here too there can be problems. For example, it is extremely difficult to be published in the relevant magazines and they may not have the necessary reach to attract the attention of the patent office in a patent search. If one selects the other traditional ways of defensive publication, such as the publication in the context of a fair, on a homepage or if one omits such a wholly, it can be very difficult to provide a definitive proof of one's own authorship in case of litigation, since both testimonies as Even computer data can be easily manipulated and faked.

IPCHAIN as a solution

It is therefore clear that a form of publication is needed that is both fast, reliable and cheap, and is to be regarded as the definitive proof of authorship. Nothing else wants to develop IPCHAIN Database. A blockchain based platform on which scientists have the opportunity to publish their work and research results. The whole thing is to be designed with a utility ERC20 token. But why do you need IPCHAIN anyway? Finally, you can upload documents to the Blockchain yourself with Swarm. In this case, however, they would not be taken into account in patent searches. In order to ensure this, IPCHAIN plans numerous filters and search options on the platform, in order to meet the requirements of patent offices for patent research.

Dominik Thor, the founder of IPCHAIN, describes the situation like this. "Innovators are at risk of being denied legal protection, recognition or financial benefits if they can not provide evidence of their inventor status, which is also accepted by patent offices and courts. Testimonies, personal correspondence, privately owned documents or publications on exhibitions or on the Internet are often inadequate evidence that tragically many innovators are unaware of. IPCHAIN is an elegant response to this problem thanks to decentralized blockchain technology and is of great help to scientists as well as commercial inventors. "

Since I myself am involved in the project, I will not go into the team here, nor to the ICO planned for early 2018. We are currently in the start-up phase and occupied in the near future still some open items in the project (eg for the development). Furthermore, we are in contact with several research groups who find our idea very interesting. Anyone interested in the project can join Slack here and on our website
