Extortion of HBO: US prosecutors file charges against Iranians

In the case of the hacker attack on HBO and the following blackmail, a US prosecutor has now identified a suspect. An indictment was filed against a 29-year-old Iranian. In his home country, he should be safe from consequences.

The incumbent prosecutor for the Southern New York district has filed charges against a 29-year-old Iranian in the case of the hacker attack on HBO. Behzad Mesri, who is said to have used the pseudonym "Skote Vahshat" on the net, is therefore accused of illegally gaining access to computer systems of the US broadcaster and copyrighted content. Then he tried to extort Bitcoin worth 6 million US dollars and finally stolen content posted on the Internet. Even if the Iranian was not arrested, he now has to look behind him every day, according to prosecutor Joon H. Kim. For hackers like him, "winter is coming".

In early August it had become known that the pay-TV station HBO had been the victim of a hacker attack. Over the days, cybercriminals calling themselves "white-hat" hackers pressured the broadcaster with leaks of content, claiming it to be "a kind of game". HBO had stated that they did not want to play in the game because the hackers were hoping for media attention in every release. You would not communicate with them, nor would you comment on them every time there was a new release of material. According to the prosecutors, the criminals stole internal details on "Game of Thrones" and unsung episodes of "Curb Your Enthusiasm", "Room 104" and "The Deuce", among others.

Long career as a hacker

Mesri is said to have acted from Iran and acted earlier as a hacker for the military in the country. He is said to have focused on military networks, software of nuclear power plants and Israeli infrastructure. In addition, he is a member of a group called "Turk Black Hat" hundreds of websites from the US and other countries have changed unjustified ("defaced"). His attack on HBO began around May 2017, and at the end of July he sent the station information about the attack by e-mail. If he falls into the hands of US prosecutors, the prosecution may face several years or even decades of imprisonment. (Mho)
